Pastor Les Robinson

Pastor Les Robinson and his great-great-great-grandfather, Daniel Blue, brought to Sacramento in 1849 as an enslaved man.

Our history books have taught us that California was admitted to the union as a “free state” through the Compromise of 1850 to address the issue and maintain the balance between free and enslaved person states. History can leave out events, critical perspectives, and a family’s ancestry when hidden or suppressed. Uncovering family history involves piecing together fragmented narratives and seeking out truth. Personal stories provide a window into the history of our cities and states. Through one person’s story, this talk will challenge our misconceptions and urge a deeper, more nuanced understanding of California’s complex past while fostering a dialogue on confronting and rectifying historical wrongs in the present.
